Ecuador is upgrading its national drought monitor to anticipate dry conditions up to a year ahead, helping water, agriculture and energy planners prepare earlier and protect communities.

Overview

The project will add statistical modelling to Ecuador’s National Drought Monitor to estimate the likelihood of drought three, six, nine and twelve months ahead. It will improve map resolution, incorporate an additional drought indicator and tailor thresholds and information products to agriculture, energy and drinking water needs.

Volunteer observations will help assess and refine the system, while an action plan and stronger institutional coordination will support earlier responses to emerging water shortages.
