Burundi is introducing rainwater harvesting and smart irrigation to help farming cooperatives in Karusi secure water for homes and crops, improve harvests and reduce tensions over scarce supplies.

Overview

The project will combine rainwater harvesting, smart irrigation and connected water monitoring tools to improve supplies for household use and farming. Data will help cooperatives manage water use and guide fairer distribution as rainfall becomes less predictable.

Training will support 24 cooperatives, benefiting over 720 families in Karusi, to operate the systems and make informed water management decisions. The approach aims to reduce waste, protect harvests and ease tensions over scarce water resources.
