Combining Green Credit and Picture-based Index Insurance for Smallholder Farmers
Ghana is combining solar-powered irrigation, affordable credit and picture-based insurance to help smallholder tomato farmers manage drought, protect harvests and invest in more resilient farming.
Overview
The project will bundle solar-powered irrigation with tailored green loans and digital insurance using crop photographs. Affordable finance will help farmers meet irrigation costs, while insurance will provide protection against climate-related production losses and reduce lending risks.
A pilot involving around 400 smallholder tomato farmers will test the combined package, build farmers’ and institutions’ capacity to use it, and develop a commercially viable model for wider adoption across Ghana.
